Errol and Chantal’s Surprise Proposal Between Dorsoduro, San Marco and San Giorgio
Some proposal stories begin with a simple question. Others begin weeks before, with careful planning, a little suspense and the desire to create a moment that feels truly unforgettable.
When Errol, from the Netherlands, first contacted me about his trip to Venice with Chantal, I immediately understood that this would not be a classic surprise proposal. He wanted something more playful, more layered, and very personal.
This is part of the email he sent me:
“Dear Luca… my partner and I will celebrate our 9-year anniversary. On this very special day, I am planning to propose to her, and I would love your help in capturing this unforgettable moment.
I came across your portfolio and was truly impressed by your work. Your style and ability to capture genuine emotions really stood out to me, and I would be honored to have you document such an important occasion.
My partner has a strong suspicion that I may propose on this day, so I would like to make it a bit more playful and surprising. My idea is to create a few moments throughout the day where she might think “this could be it,” but then not propose yet—building anticipation—until the actual proposal happens at a moment she truly does not expect. I believe your experience could really help in planning and capturing this in a natural and beautiful way…”
For a Venice proposal photographer, this kind of message is both exciting and delicate. Venice offers endless romantic possibilities, but when the person being proposed to already suspects something, the real challenge is not only choosing a beautiful location. It is creating a rhythm, a small story within the day, where anticipation grows naturally without making the final moment feel staged.
Since Errol and Chantal were staying at the beautiful Hotel Ca’ Maria Adele, in Dorsoduro, I suggested starting from there. Dorsoduro is one of the most elegant and atmospheric areas of Venice: quieter than San Marco, full of narrow streets, bridges, reflections and soft Venetian light. It was the perfect beginning for an engagement photoshoot that had to feel relaxed and authentic.
We walked through the peaceful streets of the sestiere, letting the session begin as a natural couple photoshoot in Venice. From there, we reached the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, one of the most iconic views of the city. The setting was already romantic enough for a proposal, but that was exactly the point: Chantal could wonder if this might be the moment, while Errol simply continued the experience.
After Dorsoduro, we moved to Piazza San Marco, where I had arranged a gondola ride. The gondola would pass under the Bridge of Sighs, one of the most symbolic and photographed places in Venice. It would have been an obvious setting for a proposal: intimate, scenic, unmistakably Venetian. And perhaps Chantal thought so too.
But Errol did not propose.
That small absence of the expected moment made the story even better.
After the gondola ride, we continued walking toward Rialto. The session unfolded through some of the most iconic areas of Venice, but without losing its intimate feeling. Photographing an engagement session in Venice is always a balance between grandeur and privacy: the city is famous, busy and spectacular, yet the best photographs often happen in the pauses, in the quieter gestures, in the way two people move together through the city.
At Rialto, another surprise was waiting: a private motorboat. From there, we travelled along the Grand Canal, surrounded by palaces, reflections and the unique rhythm of Venice seen from the water. Again, this could have been the moment. A private boat, the Grand Canal, the movement of the city around them. It had all the ingredients of a perfect proposal.
But once again, Errol waited.
The motorboat brought us to the island of San Giorgio, one of my favourite locations for a proposal photoshoot in Venice. From there, the view opens beautifully toward the basin of San Marco, with the skyline of Venice in the background. It feels close to the city and yet slightly removed from it, almost like standing at the edge of the scene rather than inside the crowd.
And that was where the real proposal finally happened.
At the very end of the photoshoot, when Chantal was no longer expecting it, Errol chose his moment. With Venice behind them, the water in front of them and the whole day leading quietly toward that instant, he asked her to marry him.
Her reaction was exactly what he had hoped for: genuine, emotional, surprised. Not because she had never imagined the proposal might happen during the trip, but because the day had been designed to let the expectation rise and fall until the final moment became beautifully unexpected.
After the proposal, we took a few more portraits on San Giorgio, with the skyline of Venice as a backdrop. The atmosphere had changed completely. There is always a special lightness after the question has been asked and answered, a visible relief and joy that makes the final images feel different from everything that came before.
The motorboat then took us back to San Marco, perfectly on time for Errol and Chantal to reach the nearby restaurant he had booked for their anniversary dinner. It was a beautifully planned day from beginning to end: Dorsoduro, Santa Maria della Salute, San Marco, the gondola, the Bridge of Sighs, Rialto, the Grand Canal, San Giorgio, and finally the proposal with Venice unfolding behind them.
A few days after delivering the photographs, I received this message:
“Hello Luca,
Thank you so much! We absolutely love the photos—they turned out beautifully and really capture the special moments of the day. Thank you for your professionalism, creativity, and for making us feel so comfortable throughout the shoot.
It was a pleasure having you as our photographer, and we truly appreciate all the care and effort you put into your work. Thanks again for everything, and we wish you all the best!”
For me, being chosen as a Venice proposal photographer is never only about documenting a beautiful background. It is about helping a couple create a memory that feels true to them. In Errol and Chantal’s case, Venice became more than a location. It became part of the surprise, part of the emotion, and part of the story they will remember from the day they got engaged.
