A surprise marriage proposal in Salò with a romantic engagement photo session on Lake Garda

Dylan contacted me a few months before his trip to Italy from New York. He and his girlfriend Ashley had been together for six years and were planning a trip through northern Italy together. Their itinerary included a few days on Lake Como followed by a stay on Lake Garda, and somewhere during this trip he wanted to surprise her with a marriage proposal.

From the very beginning he asked for my advice about the best place to plan such an important moment. While both Lake Como and Lake Garda offer incredible scenery for a proposal or an engagement photoshoot, I explained to him that my main area of expertise is Lake Garda. Over the years I have photographed many couples here and I know the different areas of the lake extremely well. I can suggest the best locations according to the season, the quietest times of the day, and the places that still offer intimacy even during the busiest tourist periods.

I also told him that if he had decided to organize the proposal on Lake Como, my advice would have been to choose a local photographer with the same knowledge and experience there. For a surprise proposal, details matter. Tourist crowds, timing, and privacy can completely change the experience.

After considering everything, Dylan decided to choose Lake Garda and asked me to photograph the proposal.

They would be staying in Salò, a beautiful town on the western shore of Lake Garda. This side of the lake is lively and elegant, yet it usually feels calmer than the eastern shore, especially in spring before the peak summer season begins. Salò was therefore the perfect setting for an intimate engagement proposal.

I chose a very small beach overlooking the bay of Salò and the town itself. Just a couple of weeks later that place would have been filled with people, but during that period it was almost completely empty. The atmosphere was peaceful and private, exactly what Dylan had hoped for.

As planned, I pretended to be there casually when they arrived. Dylan approached me and asked if I could take a photo of them with his phone. Ashley naturally thought it was just a simple vacation picture to remember their trip to Italy. A few seconds later he got down on one knee and surprised her with the proposal.

She immediately burst into tears and said yes.

The soft light created by the veiled sky made the entire moment feel even more intimate and genuine. There was nothing distracting around them, only the quiet atmosphere of the lake and the emotion of a life changing moment shared together.

After the surprise proposal we continued with an engagement photoshoot through the streets of Salò. Walking along the lakeside promenade, exploring the small alleys of the historic center, and stopping for an aperitivo together became part of the story of their day on Lake Garda.

Photographing couples from abroad always allows me to see these places through fresh eyes, but there was something particularly authentic about Dylan and Ashley. Maybe it was the excitement of finally taking this step together after six years, or maybe it was the relaxed atmosphere they found here on Lake Garda, far from the fast rhythm of New York.

Either way, Salò became the perfect place for the beginning of their new chapter together.
